I wonder how Room 101 could change Winston, to the extent he accepted 2+2=5?

Being confined to Room 101 forces Winston to confront his own isolation and helplessness. He begin to unravel mentally from the stress. He comes to realize that, being alone and helpless, he will not be able to change his situation. The society run by Big Brother is larger and more powerful than he is, and he cannot do anything to change the way things are. Once he accepts this, he is made more passive and accepting, like the people he had previously hated.
