The first part of the chapter sees Winston waiting for Julia and meditating on how their relationship has grown from a physical thing into a more emotional thing. When Julia arrives, she is carrying a large sack of items only meant for inner part members: real sugar, real bread, jam, and real coffee. We see the two sneaking around and hiding things that should be available to everyone and doing things that everyone should be able to do if they'd like. The main ideas are reminiscence, control, authenticity, relationships, and the fact that the inner party is more privileged than the other party members.
