    The threat of discovery looms constantly over Winston and Julia's relationship; the Thought Police are ever-present and well-hidden. Thus, there are a few instances where Winston voices his concerns about the swiftly approaching end of their relationship. Most notably, near the end of section III of part 2, Winston tells Julia, "We are the dead."

    Another such instance can be found at the end of section VII of part 2.
