Winston’s writing is interrupted by his neighbor, Comrade—or Mrs.—Parsons, who asks his help with a repair. Her children play a favorite game: Spies. Thinking of the “child heroes” who denounce their parents, Winston supposes that the Parsons’ children are typical of most others. Dressed in the uniform of the Spies, the children leap about accusing Winston of all sorts of crimes, including “thoughtcrime.” Mrs. Parsons...
