In terms of the first two characters, I would examine Winston's opposition to Oceania's attempts to control and consolidate power.  I think a strong case can be developed from seeing him and uniquely and distinctly striving to be divergent from the controlling elements of the social order.  Some of this might be the rationale for his relationship with Julia, and in that, you might find more characteristics of each.
