About the Author: Geraldine Ferraro (1935–) was born in Newburgh, New York. At sixteen, she graduated high school and earned a college scholarship. She worked her way through Fordham Law School as a public school teacher. In 1978, Ferraro was elected to Congress and served three terms. She served as Walter Mondale's vice presidential running mate in 1984, becoming the first woman nominated to a major party presidential ticket. In 1993, she was appointed as a delegate to the United Nations Human Rights Commission
