About the Author: Beth Becker Henley (1952–) was born in Jackson, Mississippi. She received a B.F.A. from Southern Methodist University in 1974. She attended graduate school at the University of Illinois for a year to study acting. Henley sets her plays in the South and draws upon her background for characters and inspiration. She won the Pulitzer Prize for Crimes of the Heart in 1981; the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, 1981; and the Oppenheimer Award, 1981. She has written plays, screenplays, and television plays.
Introduction
Beth Henley wanted to be an actress but realized that there were not many parts for Southern women. She turned to playwriting and created several memorable female characters of Southern heritage....
