About the Author: Harry Andrew Blackmun (1908–1999) was born in Nashville, Illinois. He graduated from Harvard in 1929 and received his law degree from that same university. From 1950 to 1959 he served as the general counsel to the Mayo Clinic. Following that position, he was appointed a federal circuit court judge.
