About the Author: Richard M. Nixon (1913–1994) became the thirty-seventh president of the United States (served 1969–1974) in 1968, and he won re-election in 1972. Among his most important accomplishments was opening of diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, severed since the communist takeover in 1949. Nixon was forced to resign from office in 1974 during the Watergate scandal, however, before full diplomatic relations could be restored. Although his reputation never recovered, Nixon regained a measure of respect as an elder statesman...
