About the Authors: Vincent M. Sarich (1934–) was born in Chicago and was professor of physical anthropology at Stanford University from 1967 to 1981, when he joined the faculty at the University of California, Berkeley. His and Allan C. Wilson's use of DNA evidence to determine when humans and the African apes last shared a common ancestor broke new ground in paleoanthropology. He remains emeritus professor at Berkeley. Allan Charles Wilson (1934–1991) was born in Ngaruawahia, New Zealand, and immigrated to the United States in 1955, where he served thirty-five years as professor of biochemistry at the University of California at Berkeley.
