About the Author: William O. Douglas (1898–1980), at age forty, was one of the youngest men ever to be appointed to the Supreme Court, and after thirty-six years (1939–1975), his tenure was the longest in Supreme Court history. As a child, he recovered from polio by walking outside, which fostered his love of the environment. Prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court, he was chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission....
