Introduction
Aletha Gibson, at twenty-nine, won the 1957 Wimbledon women's singles title, becoming the first African American of either gender to win that tournament and a major tennis championship. Her ascent was difficult, but she persevered to reach the top of the tennis world. Growing up in New York City, Gibson was first pushed toward tennis by a playground superintendent who recognized her talent for the sport.
