About the Author: Otto Struve (1897–1963) was born in Ukraine and emigrated to the United States in 1921. He was an astronomer at Yerkes Observatory in Wisconsin and became its director in 1932. That year he organized McDonald Observatory in Texas, becoming its director in 1938. In 1947 he retired from both positions to chair the University of Chicago's astronomy department. During his career he published several books and some seven hundred articles.
