About the Author: John Coleman Bennett (1902–1995) was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, and was educated at Williams College, Oxford University, and Union Theological Seminary. In 1943, he joined Union Theological Seminary as a professor of social ethics. In 1964, he was appointed president of the seminary. He was coeditor of the periodical Christianity and Crisis. He lectured and wrote about such issues as civil rights, war, and the relationship between church and state.
