She received her B.A. in history from University of California at Los Angeles and is a full-time freelance writer. Her books include The Working Parents' Handbook, The Flavor of L.A.: A Guide to Ethnic Restaurants and Markets, and What We Wore.
Introduction
Before the end of World War II (1939–1945), adolescents had little personal disposable income. The words "teen age" to refer to this age group appeared in the early 1920s, but it was the late 1930s or early 1940s before the term shifted to the current word "teenager." Due to financial and social constrictions, teens had little choice in the matter...
