Introduction

Men's fashion in the 1950s was, not surprisingly, business oriented and extremely conformist. Men's and women's roles were rigidly defined in the 1950s. Marriage was expected of all (single people were as worrisome as communists, almost); women were expected to become mothers and homemakers; men were expected to be wage earners and family providers. The fashion industry catered largely to the homemakers and not the wage earners. It would be a decade or two before men's fashion developed any sort of flair.

Specifically, businessmen wore conservative suits with cuffed, rarely pleated, pants and narrow jackets. The jackets usually had two to four buttons on their small lapels. Ties were narrow...
