About the Organization: Studebaker, founded in 1852, was the only wagon manufacturer to successfully make the transition into the automobile industry at the turn of the twentieth century. The H & C Studebaker blacksmith shop opened in 1858 in South Bend, Indiana. It became the largest wagon manufacturer in the world. The company introduced an electric car in 1902 and a gasoline-powered car two years later, although it continued to manufacture wagons until the 1920s.
