About the Author: Linus Pauling (1901–1994) was born in Portland, Oregon. He graduated from Oregon State Agricultural College in 1922 and earned his Ph.D. at the California Institute of Technology in 1925. For two years thereafter he worked in Europe with first-rate scientists. In 1927 he joined the faculty at Cal Tech, where he became a professor in 1931.
