About the Author: Benjamin Spock (1903–1998) was the oldest of six children. He graduated from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1929. After training as a pediatrician, he sought further education in psychology and psychoanalysis in an effort to understand the emotional needs of babies and children.
