About the Author: Marguerite Higgins (1921–1966) joined the staff of the New York Herald Tribune at the age of 21 and became one of the first female war reporters. She wrote the following piece on the Dachau concentration camp at 24. Higgins devoted her life to covering world conflict, travelling throughout the world to provide readers with dramatic reporting from the battlefronts of Europe, Korea, and Vietnam.
