About the Author: The son of a Minnesota congressman, Charles A. Lindbergh (1902–1974) emerged as one of the most popular figures in the United States in 1927, when he became the first pilot to fly solo, nonstop, across the Atlantic Ocean. The life of an American idol, though, proved to be far from safe and secure.
