Born in Missouri, he held a seat in the U.S. Senate before becoming vice president during the last term of President Franklin D. Roosevelt (served 1933–1945). When Roosevelt died suddenly in 1945, Truman became the thirty-third president of the United States. He remained in the White House until 1953.
