About the Author: Robert F. Wagner (1877–1953), a native of Germany, came to the United States with his parents in 1885. He attended the City College of New York and New York Law School. In 1926, Wagner was elected a United States senator from New York—an office he held until his retirement in 1949. Throughout his career, Wagner remained one of the most influential and effective leaders of American liberalism.
