About the Author: Clyde Tombaugh (1906–1997) attended high school in his native Streator, Illinois. His amateur astronomy work won him a place at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, where he discovered Pluto in 1930. He received his M.S. in physics in 1938 from the University of Kansas, while continuing to work full-time at the Lowell Observatory.
