About the Author: Father Divine (c. 1880–1965) was born George Baker in rural Georgia and became a noted African-American evangelist. He organized a religious movement called the Peace Mission and served as its director from 1915 to 1965. He built a large following among African Americans, especially in New York and Philadelphia.
