About the Author: Herbert Hoover (1874–1964) was president of the United States from 1929–1933. A civil engineer by training, his international reputation as a humanitarian and administrator resulted in his appointment in 1914 as chief Allied relief administrator during World War I (1914–1918). He became Secretary of Commerce in 1921 and the Republican presidential candidate in 1928.
