About the Organization: A Century of Progress was organized on January 5, 1928, as an Illinois corporation for the purpose of "the holding of a World's Fair in Chicago in the year 1933." The U.S. Congress authorized the president of the United States to invite the nations of the world to participate. The exposition imposed no tax burden on the American people already struggling under the weight of the Depression. Founders and sustaining members of the World's Fair Legion contributed all necessary funds.
