About the Author: Robert Fechner (1876–1939), born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, was the grandson of German immigrants. At age sixteen he began his training as an apprentice machinist, joined a local union, and was elected secretary. He then worked as a traveling machinist for nine years, and eventually became a noted union leader who represented labor and helped settle many disputes.
