About the Author: Frank C. Norris (1907–1967) was a Tennessee-born graduate of Princeton University. He joined Time magazine in 1929 as a staff writer and eventually became managing editor of the magazine. He later became a senior editor of Newsweek. Norris was the author of three novels.

The life of Benny Goodman (1909–1986) was a rags-to-riches story. Born in a poor Chicago household, Goodman used his natural musical gift to pave the way to financial success. He received early training at the Kehelah Jacob Synagogue and then at Jane Addams' Hull House. His most influential teacher was the classically trained clarinetist Franz Schoepp....
