About the Author: Kaufmann Kohler (1843–1926) was born in Germany. Raised in an orthodox Jewish family, he later became a leader in Reform Judaism. Kohler immigrated to the United States in 1869 and after serving various congregations became president of Hebrew Union College in 1903. He died on January 28, 1926, at the age of eighty-two.
