About the Author: Shailer Mathews (1863–1941), a noted liberal theologian, became a professor at the Divinity School of the new University of Chicago in 1894. He was a strong advocate of employing modern methods for the study of Scripture, which eventually led to conflicts with Fundamentalists. He died on October 23, 1941, at the age of seventy-eight.
Introduction
Shailer Mathews graduated from Newton Theological Institution in 1887. Not feeling a call to ministry, he decided to become a teacher. He taught rhetoric at Colby College and then became professor of history and political economy.
