About the Author: Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. (1835–1941) served in the Union army in the Civil War (1861–1865) from 1861 to 1864. He joined the Massachusetts Supreme Court as an associate justice in 1883. In 1899, he became chief justice of that organization, and, in 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt (served 1901–1909) appointed him associate justice to the U.S. Supreme Court.
