About the Author: Herbert Clark Hoover (1874–1964) was the first American president born west of the Mississippi River. In 1883, he was orphaned when his mother died of pneumonia. In 1895, he graduated with a geology degree from Stanford University in California. By the age of forty, the skilled mineral engineer owned Burma silver mines and was a self-made multimillionaire. Hoover became president at the onset of the Great Depression.
