About the Artists: Ubbe Iwwerks (1901–1971) is widely credited with sketching the world-famous cartoon character Mickey Mouse. He simplified the spelling of his name to Ub Iwerks when he joined Walt Disney's California animation studio in 1924. Iwerks was a pioneering animator and won two Academy Awards for his technical achievements. His innovations enabled Disney Studios to become a leader in photographic and animation special effects. He also revolutionized the art of film restoration, pioneering the so-called wet gate system of eliminating scratches on old films by printing them under liquid.
