About the Author: Emmanuel Rudnitsky (1890–1976) was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Brooklyn. At fifteen, the aspiring artist shortened his name to Man Ray. Never one to adhere to any particular artistic style or medium, Ray created a diverse body of work. In 1921, Ray moved to Paris, where he produced his most experimental art. He was the only American artist to figure prominently in both the Dada and Surrealist art movements.
Introduction
In 1915, Ray met the French artist Marcel Duchamp, who was living in the United States at the time. The two became lifelong friends and together they formed the New York branch of the Dada movement.
