About the Author: Born Israel Isidore Baline in Mohilev, Russia, Irving Berlin (1888–1989) moved to New York with his family in 1893. Israel changed his name to Irving Berlin and taught himself enough piano to begin writing songs. He sold his first song in 1907 and scored his first big hit with "Alexander's Ragtime Band" in 1911. Though he never learned to read music, he composed around fifteen hundred songs, among them such classics as "Blue Skies," "White Christmas," and "God Bless America."
