About the Author: George Weiss (1895–1972) was a baseball executive for both the New York Yankees and New York Mets. During his tenure with the Yankees (1932–1960) as farm team director and general manager, the Yankees were one of the most successful franchises in the game. His career earned him a place in the National Baseball Hall of Fame, where he was inducted in 1971.

Introduction

At the age of nineteen, George Weiss became a national figure in baseball without a nasty curve ball or a home-run swing. He gained notoriety through the exploits of the semi-pro team he managed, the New Haven Colonials.
