About the Author: Elwood S. Brown was an athletic director for the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) of the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. He had gained notoriety previously as the physical director of the American YMCA in Manila, Philippines for many years. In that position, he introduced basketball and volleyball to the people of the Philippines and created athletic competitions between United States soldiers and local residents. His role in introducing volleyball to the Philippines was one of the key factors in the internationalization of the sport.
