About the Author: Dr. Dudley A. Sargent (1849–1924) was a prominent figure in early physical education, and he served as the Director of the Hemenway Gymnasium at Harvard University from 1879 to 1919. He was one of the pioneers of research into physical fitness, a science now called kinesiology. He studied the human body, seeking the most perfect proportions for both men and women, by collecting the measurements of almost all of his students. As a contributor to Ladies' Home Journal, his academic credentials helped influence number of people to accepts his arguments.
