About the Author: Charles Evans Hughes (1862–1948), born in New York, is one of the few U.S. Supreme Court justices to join the Court twice. After serving as governor of New York starting in 1906, President William Howard Taft (served 1909–1913) appointed Hughes to the Supreme Court in 1910.
