About the Author: William Gunn Shepherd, a reporter for the United Press, was in Manhattan's Washington Square on March 25, 1911, when a devastating fire ripped through the Triangle Shirtwaist Company. Shepherd found a nearby telephone and dictated the details of the tragedy to his editor, who telegraphed the story to the nation's newspapers.
