About the Author: Charles Putnam Tower (1854?–1919) was an avid boater and secretary of the Yacht Racing Association of Long Island Sound. He contributed frequent articles about boating and yacht racing to The New York Times in the 1900s and 1910s. In 1905 he helped found the Motor Boat Club of America and served as its temporary chairman.
