  • Nannie Helen Burroughs founds the Women's Auxiliary Convention of the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A., Inc. She gives an influential speech titled "How the Sisters Are Hindered From Helping."
  • Congregationalist preacher and Social Gospel theologian Washington Gladden runs for city council in Columbus, Ohio, and wins a two-year term.
  • On January 8, Mormon church president Lorenzo Snow releases a statement saying the Church had "positively abandoned the practice of polygamy, or the solemnization of plural marriages…"
