About the Author: Solomon Washington Gladden (1836–1918) was born in Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, and in 1859 graduated from Williams College. In 1882 he became the pastor of the First Congregational Church of Columbus, Ohio, where he served for the rest of his life.
