About the Author: Upton Sinclair (1878–1968) was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and studied at the City College of New York and Columbia University. While at Columbia, he wrote six novels. Of these, The Jungle (1906) won him celebrity. Not content as a novelist, he unsuccessfully ran four times for political office in California. His closest bid came in 1934 when he narrowly lost the gubernatorial race.
