About the Author: Lincoln Steffens (1866–1936) pioneered the 1900s journalism movement known as muckraking. Born in San Francisco, California, Steffens studied at the University of California at Berkeley, then in Germany and France. He worked for several New York newspapers before becoming managing editor of the muckraking journal McClure's.
