About the Author: Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919) entered politics at age 23. Famously energetic, he held numerous positions. In 1898, he fought in the Spanish-American War with the "Rough Riders" volunteer cavalry regiment that he had formed. He was elected governor of New York that same year. In 1900, he was elected vice president of the United States. When President McKinley (served 1897–1901) was assassinated in 1901, Roosevelt became president.
