About the Author: Melvin W. Fuller (1833–1910) was chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1888 until 1910. A native of Maine, he read law and attended Yale Law School. Fuller was the manager for Stephen Douglas' presidential campaign in 1860 and later became active in real estate law. There was some opposition to Fuller's appointment as Chief Justice due to concerns about his loyalty to the Union during the Civil War (1861–1865). Fuller started the custom, which continues to this day, of Supreme Court justices shaking hands before their conferences.
