About the Author: David J. Brewer (1837–1910) served on the U.S. Supreme Court from 1889 until his death. Born in what is now Turkey, he was the son of U.S. missionaries. Brewer graduated from Yale University, read law for one year, and attended Albany Law School. He served on the Kansas Supreme Court for over a decade before being nominated for the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. Brewer was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Benjamin Harrison (served 1889–1893).
