About the Author: Melville Fuller (1833–1910) was chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1888 until his death. Prior to beginning his career, he read law and attended Yale Law School for six months. The Maine native was the manager for Stephen Douglas' presidential campaign in 1860 and later became active in real estate law. Fuller's appointment as chief justice met opposition from those who questioned his loyalty to the Union during the Civil War (1861–1865). He started the custom of Supreme Court justices shaking hands before their conferences.
